Strop
With use, the incredibly delicate edge on a razor will become microscopically bent. Stropping the razor straightens and redefines razors edge so it will not drag while shaving. A straight razor should be stropped before each use and after honing. To maintain a fine shaving edge, those individuals with a thick beard may want to strop their straight razor several times during shaving. If at any time during your shaving you feel the razor start to drag, that is a sign that the edge needs to be stropped. Longer strops produce a longer stropping surface and therefore shorten the strop time. Some strops have an uncoated linen or fabric backing. This backing is simply used to warm the blade, via friction, prior to stropping (paste or rouge should not be applied to the linen or cloth side of the strop). Warming the blade prior to stropping shortens the time necessary for stropping.

Strop Paste/Dressing
Strop paste creates friction between the razor and the strop to increase the effectiveness of the strop and is applied to the smooth side of the leather. We recommend and sell only non-abrasive strop paste/dressing. Our strop paste is designed to condition and protect you strop, improve the quality of your stropping session and shorten the time needed to strop your razor.

Hone
Most of our clients find that their straight razor requires honing about once a month. Honing re-sharpens the edge of the razor. A razor should be first stropped before honing to ensure that the blade is properly aligned before being honed. Straight razor hones are usually either a fine grade surgical Arkansas stone or hard black Arkansas stone.

Be assured that any razor strop or hone purchased form PremiumKnives.com is of the finestquality available.
